BEENA KANNAN - THE LUXURIOUS SILK HAUTE COUTURE

Scion of the ‘Seematti’ family, Beena Kannan comes from a rich heritage of textile lovers. Born on 17th July 1960 in Kottayam, Beena Kanan is the daughter of V. Thiruvenkitam and Mrs Seetha Lakshmi Thiruvenkitam and the granddaughter of textile king Veeriah Reddiar. Beena joined the family’s textile retail business in 1980 alongside her father, Mr V. Thiruvenkitam, and her husband, Mr Kannan. In the year 2000, with her husband’s untimely demise, Beena took charge of the business single-handedly. The remarkable transformation of Beena Kannan from a young and dynamic person to a powerful, visionary leader and a successful woman entrepreneur is noteworthy.

Upholding the vision of Seematti – ‘The Queen of Silks’ high, Beena brought in a new and unique perspective towards Kancheepuram silks which was predominant only in the southern part of India then. Her sole aim was to draw a distinction and make a niche for the indigenous Kancheepuram silk sarees across the globe and also to preserve this culture-rich ethnic fabric across the years.

Seematti has two large experiential stores in Kottayam and Kochi – each more than 5 lakh square feet. Beena Kannan gained a lot of popularity when her self-curated, longest-ever silk saree made its way into the Guinness Book of Records and Limca Book of Records in 2007. Her saree designs were also launched in the UAE and the US in 2007 and 2009, respectively. In September 2011, Beena Kannan-designer sarees walked the ‘Swarovski Elements 2011’ Ramp.

In addition to her extensive research on silk and sarees, Beena Kannan was also aware of how a good shopping experience was paramount in the success of any retail business. The visual decor and shopping comfort at Seematti is at par with global standards. Her attention to brides and personalizing the bridal garments is an excellent bonus while shopping at Seematti. Being the face of undying professionalism and change in the bridal fashion industry, she embodies women empowerment. With the ‘Beena Kannan’ label launch, a lot is in store for the Indian silk and weaving industry. With her signature label, Beena Kannan aims to take Kancheepuram silk to new heights.
